By volunteering your time, you can use your commercial skills to make a real difference to African businesses.
EFA looks for self-starting volunteers, able to manage their own work operating in a different environment with limited central support. There are three main ways to volunteer with EFA:
- Successful entrepreneurs can mentor one of our most ambitious customers. To qualify, you should have experience running a company employing between 30 and 200 people. You will be matched up with an entrepreneur suitable for you. This starts with a 1-3 week period shadowing the entrepreneur, and you are then free to agree an ongoing arrangement with the entrepreneur that suits both parties.
- Professional volunteers can conduct self-contained consulting projects. You should have blue-chip corporate, finance, technology or management consulting experience. Examples of projects undertaken by volunteers include development of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) reporting, review of environmental standards in our investee businesses and redesign, redevelopment and implementation of our new IT platform. Other examples of projects could be analysis of local value chains in sectors such as dairy, animal feeds and building materials or working with entrepreneurs in marketing.
- Experienced graduates can volunteer in London and/or Tanzania. For example, there is an annual placement for a communications volunteer in Moshi, Northern Tanzania, managing investor and donor communications and other responsibilities.
Most volunteers will be self-funded, but if you have particularly relevant skills we will consider funding travel costs.
If you are interested in volunteering through any of these channels, please contact us with your CV and covering letter, explaining which of these options you are applying for, the dates that you are available, why you want to volunteer for us, what you think you can add, and any specific preferences that you have. We always have more ideas than people to research and implement them, so get in touch and we can explore what options there are.
