Mboreny Dairy

It is a tradition in Kilimanjaro region for every household to keep at least one milk cow. As a result there is plenty of milk in the area, which necessitated the dairy keepers to organize themselves into the Mboreny co-operative society to selling their dairy products. They have been operating from hired premises but now they have made enough profit to buy a piece of land and build their own milk centre. Mboreny Co-op want to buy a milk cooler so that they can double their production by buying milk in the morning and in the evening. Currently, due to lack of cooling facilities they can only buy milk in the evening for early morning delivery. The investment is expected to create three extra jobs directly, a watchman, a cleaner and a milk buyer, in addition to benefiting the villagers by providing an extra outlet for their milk. The milk is sold to wholesale consumers such as schools and hospitals.

They are planning to expand the business in future by building a processing plant, where they will also make cheese, butter and ghee. In addition to creating jobs for the local community this project will also ensure supply of nutritious food to the villagers.
